AUSTRALIA—About half of all young children have holes in their teeth, the latest snapshot of the nation’s dental health shows. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) found 40 per cent of children aged between four and five and 60 per cent of six- to eight-year-olds had cavities in their temporary, or baby, teeth in 2006.
USA—A first-of-its-kind class action lawsuit filed against a New York dentist is bringing to light a dubious tactic some medical doctors employ to protect their reputations. The complaint, filed last week by a former patient of Stacy Makhnevich, a Manhattan dentist who specializes in providing care for classical singers and wind instrument musicians, pivots on a privacy agreement Makhnevich allegedly asked would-be patients to sign before receiving service.
UNITED KINGDOM—Diet has shaped human jaw bones; a result that could help explain why many people suffer with overcrowded teeth. The study has shown that jaws grew shorter and broader as humans took on a more pastoral lifestyle.
USA—Nearly 20 million Americans annually visit a dentist but not a general healthcare provider, according to a NYU study published December 15 in the American Journal of Public Health. The study conducted by a nursing-dental research team at NYU, is the first of its kind to determine the proportion of Americans who are seen annually by a dentist but not by a general healthcare provider.
USA—When it comes to receiving dental care, New Jersey has its share of underserved children, according to a new Rutgers study. In 2009, more than one-fifth of the state’s children between 3 and 18 received no dental care within the previous year.
